You send visitors to a web site. They buy something, or sign up for something, and you get paid a commission. This revenue sharing arrangement is called affiliate program. As a web site owner, you are rewarded for sending customers to the web site.
These affiliate programs are usually easy to join. After signing up, you place a banner ad, small graphic or ordinary text which links from your site to the vendor site. If someone clicks on the link and buys a product or service from the web site, you receive a commission.

Harness your passion
The best way is to concentrate on a small niche. Choose a topic in which you are passionately interested, and create a web site around that theme. Then select affiliate programs which fit the theme of your site and blend them into the site.
If possible, write about the products from first-hand knowledge, so that you become a credible information source.
The huge advantage of basing a site on a topic in which you are passionately interested is that you will enjoy running your web site and marketing the affiliate program - it will be much more like a fascinating hobby than a job.
Select your target first
Before doing anything, decide whom you are going to market the products to. Don't select the product first. Select your target audience first.
You're looking for an easily identifiable target. There's no sense in building a web site and then trying to figure out how to attract audience.

When will you be paid?
Some web sites pay you only after you have accumulated $100 or $200 in commission. I have even encountered a site who has $1,000 minimum payout requirement! If you have a very busy site, that's ok. For a small site without much traffic, it could take a long time.
There's even the odd site which won't pay you at all unless you generate a certain level of business. Read the affiliate agreement before you sign up.

The dumbest way to promote affiliate programs is to use spam - bulk unsolicited email. In plain English, don't send marketing email to someone who has nothing to do with you. You can wreck your reputation, lose your Internet connection, and forfeit any commissions you've earned.
